A FRAGILE NATURE

A Fragile Nature

After turning 60, my parents began to face the challenges of growing older. After losing both their parents, my mother and father have become keenly aware of their own mortality.

My father, an accomplished graphic designer, had been working in a youth-obsessed industry. After almost 13 years at the same company, his job was eliminated. Before this his colleagues had demeaned him and questioned his ideas. My mother, who was always proud of her youthful energy and beauty, is confronting the physical and psychological effects of aging. In many ways, society is telling them they are no longer as relevant and valued as they once were.

There is a tenderness, intimacy, and uncompromising reality about the ways I have chosen to photograph my parents. I wish to capture moments of empathy, strength, longing, and love as I document this stage of my parents’ life.
